What is a mandibular advancement device?

A mandibular advancement device is a removable dental appliance worn at night. The device consists of two splints covering the upper and lower teeth. The splints are connected by a mechanism that advances the lower jaw to keep the airways open.

This device facilitates airflow and reduces episodes of apnea and snoring, improving sleep quality. It is an effective treatment option for mild to moderate sleep apnea and for patients who do not tolerate CPAP well.

How can we help you with sleep apnea?

Your dentist can screen for and treat certain cases of sleep apnea. Our team offers personalized solutions to improve your breathing and sleep quality.

1

Sleep test

Following discussion of your symptoms, a sleep test must be performed to confirm the diagnosis of sleep apnea and assess its severity (mild, moderate, or severe). Depending on the recommendations of the sleep specialist, you have two options: Option 1: a mandibular advancement appliance for snoring and mild to moderate apnea. Option 2: a positive pressure device (CPAP) for mild to severe apnea.

2

Planning

Next, a sleep study is conducted at our clinic. A meeting with our treatment plan coordinator is scheduled to explain the details of the treatment.

3

Manufacturing and fitting of the dental appliance

Using a digital impression of your teeth, a custom-made mandibular advancement appliance is designed to keep your airways open during the night. Your dental appliance is adjusted in the clinic, millimetre by millimetre, to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Once the device has been optimally adjusted, a sleep test is repeated to evaluate the success of the therapy.

4

Long-term follow-up

We see you regularly to adjust your appliance, check your comfort, and measure the improvement in your symptoms. This follow-up is essential to guarantee the best long-term results and ensure more restful sleep.

FAQ

How do I know if I have sleep apnea?

Common signs include snoring, fatigue, frequent waking, headaches upon waking, or difficulty concentrating. A sleep test is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

Can a dental appliance help with sleep apnea?

Yes! For many patients, a mandibular advancement appliance improves breathing, reduces apnea episodes, and promotes deeper, more restful sleep.

Depending on the situation and the symptoms observed, complementary approaches may also be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, including neuromodulator injections (Botox®).

What does a mandibular advancement appliance do?

The appliance is used to slightly move the lower jaw forward. This clears the airway during sleep by preventing soft tissues, such as the tongue, from blocking the airflow. By facilitating airflow, the device eliminates snoring and reduces apnea events.
